Group building and introduction of the material we will work on. Focus on different ways of listening resulting in the exploration of new creative approaches through improvisation.
Random Sound allows students to explore how audio conveys ideas by requiring them to create a highly personal message from random, disparate pieces of audio.

This module contains different workshops: Listening and experiential sound, Haptic listening and Random Sound with a focus on the exploration of sound and listening and an improvisation directed workshops.

In the philosophy of EPAS, sound and listening are correlated. A phenomenological approach of sound and listening is practically explored by the students by doing a soundwalk, exploring fieldrecording, exploring different listening strategies as haptic listening, embodied listening, listening and the body. Presentation of different angles to discover sound and listening. Interrogation of the relationship of physical and emotional properties in sound both in the context of consciously recognised objects and as abstracted pure sound.

In Haptic listening, the process of haptic perception as both a physical and sonic experience will be explored this means: experiencing unknown objects blind through touch, whilst also experiencing the amplified resonance of that touch. For Random Sound, the assignment is to create a highly personal message – not a story. It can include a small amount of music, but not be music-led. And it can include dialogue, but not be dialogue-led. The final piece should also include their own recorded voice speaking one phrase. The emphasis of this workshop is on LISTENING, in particular, how an experienced world can be transmitted to the listener by the most explicit or abstract narrative, amplified by the qualities of the human voice.

An open attitude in listening and the engagement for some bodywork is required, proficiency with audio-recording and editing

Permanent evaluation and peer feedback at the end of each workshop. At the end of the first semester the students present their diary and self-evaluation. The end-competences of this course will be evaluated in relation to the other artistic work of the semester.
The students have to be present in the workshops
There is no possible retake or second examination period.
