Omschrijving Onderwijsorganisatie (tekst)

• Monthly in-class contact courses
• First course: introduction setup & assignment at the start & formation of teams of 2 students per team.
• First semester: each team needs to prepare one of the following topics for the monthly in-class courses
• Second semester: teams prepare a proposal to a record company showing how music band solves its many predefined problems in order to be able to sign a major deal. Monthly the state of progress will be discussed during in-class discussions.
• Self study via digital learning platform
• Self-study via literature study
• Supervised independent work

Omschrijving Inhoud

• Different stages of the musical production process: structure and operation of a record company.
• Pricing of music products: costs and benefits of the production (calculating P&L), constituent elements of the wholesale and consumer price
• Synchronization in film, television, commercials and games: relationship between composer, performing artist and artistic producer vs. audio-visual producer and director
• The changing distribution and consumption landscape: impact of technological evolutions on production, promoting, marketing and the music experience
• Role of the artistic producer: methods of reimbursement and contractual models
• Social status of the artist

Omschrijving Eindcompetenties (tekst)

The student:
• has a comprehensive knowledge of the music profession in general and basic aspect of legal and business aspects of the music industry in particular,
• understands the basic mechanisms of the business and legal aspects of the world of arts and culture and is able to apply these techniques in the real practice,
• integrates this knowledge and undertakes in an organized manner tasks that may be extended and complex, in familiar of new ways, based upon complete of limited information,
• has developed psychological insights that enables the student to negotiate in a self-confident way organizational and contractual aspects of his or her own professional practice,
• has developed social and communication skills including the ability to:
(1) initiate and work with others on joint projects or activities,
(2) show skills in leadership, teamwork, negotiation and organization
(3) integrate with other individuals in a variety of cultural contexts
(4) present complex work in an accessible form

Omschrijving Begeleiding

• Students can address difficulties in understanding to the teacher via e-mail (dries.sel@hogent.be)
• The teacher is open for individual appointments on motivated request.

Omschrijving Evaluatie (tekst)

• The student teams need to prepare 2 documents for the exam
- A paper in Word document of min. 5 pages (A4), explaining the essential findings of the mandatory reading materials related to the business case.
- A presentation in Powerpoint featuring the chosen solution for the business case
• The student teams need to mail the paper and the presentation in PDF (via email) to the teacher (dries.sel@hogent.be) by the latest on the 15th of May (first exam period) or 25th of August (second exam period).The student teams need to bring both PDF’s in printed version to the exam.
• The exam itself consist of the presentation by both team members in a balanced way.
Dit opleidingsonderdeel wordt gequoteerd op 20 (tot op een geheel getal).
Tweede examenkans: wel mogelijk.
