The course 'global awareness and engagement' consists of the following contents:

 
1. International identity of social work
2. Social work in an international perspective: global awareness an globalization
3. International topics on social work: contemporary challenges and social work practice
4. International organizations, networks and federations
5. International exchange of knowledge, practices and experiences in social work
6. Using 21st century skills to understand and address global issues

The course consists of field visits to explore the Belgian context of social work from a global social work perspective and to compare it with another European country.
 A substantive part is determined by the organizations visited during the study.

There are no prerequisites for this course.

The arrangements regarding prerequisites applied for this course unit, if applicable, are laid out in the Faculty’s international curriculum.

OLR 7 Define social problems from a social work context and in collaboration with stakeholders, from a historical, global and sustainable context.

Assignment: group paper, peer assessment

Seminars to support and coach the group paper.
The teacher is available during classes, by mail or by appointment.
Through the electronic learning environment 'Chamilo'.

First exam session

Observation of performance (20%).

Evaluation by teacher.
The professional attitude of the student will be observed before, during and after the study trip.
Presence in the lessons is obliged for the assessment in this training module. A prerequisite for the evaluation, is to attend the scheduled lessons, to participate actively in all the course components, to accomplish the assignments en to respect the given deadlines of these tasks and assignments.

Assignment: group paper (40%).

Evaluation by teacher.
Product evaluation is based on the group paper.
Presence in the lessons is obliged for the assessment in this training module. A prerequisite for the evaluation, is to attend the scheduled lessons, to participate actively in all the course components, to accomplish the assignments en to respect the given deadlines of these tasks and assignments.

Defence of the grouppaper assessed by a jury (40%).

A group presentation before a jury. Questions will be asked individually based on the content of the paper and the presentation.

Second exam session

Observation of performance (20%).

There is no second examination period. The marks gained in the observation of participation part during the first examination period are carried over or stay nihil (as the student missed the evaluation).

Assignment: individual paper (80%).

Evaluation by teacher.
Product evaluation.

The estimated cost is approx. €5 for the syllabus.

There can be extra costs during company/field visits in Belgium, the estimated cost is approx. €50.
