Objectives

Is able to devise and write file and record descriptions in COBOL.
Is able to structure and implement the business logic in one or more COBOL programs that may read, add and/or change one or more records..
Is able to understand, complete/adapt an existing COBOL program based on changing business logic.

Contents

Data types; editing; table declaration
Basic statements: iteration and selection; string manipulation; using tables
Using sequential and VSAM files
Advanced techniques for sequential file processing.

Partial competence 1: Designing and implementing a structured COBOL program. (TI01)

Indicators:

  • The student can devise and write file and record descriptions in COBOL.

  • The student can write the procedure division building on self-written file and record descriptions.

  • The student can structure and implement the business logic in one or more COBOL programs.


Partial competence 2:  Adapting an existing COBOL program (TI04)

Indicators:

  • The student can complete/adapt an existing COBOL program.

  • The student can interpret existing file and record descriptions.


Partial competence 3: Data processing in COBOL (TI01)

Indicators:

  • The student can, using a COBOL program, read, add and/or change one or more records.

Organisation of education

Instructional dialogue with exercises, which are discussed and worked out during the lectures. The students have the possibility to do, at their own pace, a number of of exercises in line with the taught material.
