Objectives

The students are introduced to mainframes and will learn how to work in a mainframe environment.

Contents

What is a Mainframe :  Batch jobs and online use.
Data sets, parameters, catalogue.
ISPF.
SDSF.
Programming languages in Z/OS.
Compiling and linking.
JCL syntax.
REXX.
All topics are illustrated by examples and practised under supervision.

Order of enrolment

There are no prerequisites for this course.

Prerequisites

Databases II, Computer architecture, Operating systems and Networks, OO-programming II.

Final objectives

Partial competence 1: Is able to automate system tasks. .(TI07)

Indicators:
1.1. Is able to write and debug simple REXX scripts;
1.2. Is able to discuss and adapt existing REXX scripts.


Partial competence 2: Practical use of a Mainframe. (TI07)

Indicators:

2.1. Is able to use the different mainframe interfaces, and more in particular ISPF

2.2. Is able to submit jobs and to view the results in SDSF

2.3. Knows how  to compile and execute programs on a mainframe.

2.4. Is familiar with the different types of datasets on a mainframe.


Partial competence 3: Is able to compose and execute jobs. (TI01)

Indicators:

3.1. Is able to code jobs in JCL.

3.2. Is able to discuss and adapt existing JCL jobs

Organisation of education

Teaching conversation with exercises.

Study guidance

Individual learning problems may always be reported to the lecturer and will be remedied.
Students are guided and coached.

Evaluation

  • First exam session: 
    • non-period bound evaluation: 30% (test on pc)
    • period bound evaluation: 70 % :written exam on computer and on paper – oral illustration to the lecturer during the exam.
  • Second exam session: 
    • non-period bound evaluation: /
    • period bound evaluation: 100% written exam on computer and on paper – oral illustration to the lecturer during the exam.
