Academic year 2023-24
Is found in:
  • Bachelor of Chemistry, programme stage 3
    Specialisation:
    • Environmental Technology
This is a single course unit.
Study load: 3 credits
Weight: 3,00
Total study time: 75,00 hours
Co-ordinator: Berckmoes Karla
Languages: Dutch
Scheduled for: Semester 1

Final objectives

The student can safely monitor and control a process installation and contribute to the improvement and upscaling of the (semi-) industrial production process in the environmental technology industry
The student can implement the environmental legislation and can communicate and advise on this adequately and motivatingly

Objectives

  • Taking into account environmental considerations in the design and operation of industrial installations (OLR 15, T)
  • Describing water prevention, control and processing techniques (OLR 15, S&I)
  • Understanding and displaying different water treatment systems (OLR 15, T)
  • Applying environmental conditions, emission standards, standards and EQS and BATs correctly (OLR 16, T)

Contents

  • Collection and treatment of drinking water
  • Parameters of water pollution
  • Manure action plan MAP: problems, objectives, approach, consequences
  • Measurement technologies: flow rates, pollutant loads
    Wastewater treatment technology :
discussion of the primary treatment techniques: grids, cutting grids, sieves, levelling, neutralisation, sedimentation, sand, grease and oil separators, flotation, coagulation-flocculation, precipitation of heavy metals ...
  • Discussion of secondary or biological purification techniques: active sludge systems, biofilters, biorotors, submerged aerated fixed bed, SAF systems, plant systems, anaerobic purification systems...
  • Discussion of tertiary treatment: nitrification, denitrification, phosphorus removal, sand filtration, disinfection. Membrane processes (micro-, ultra-, nannofiltration, reverse osmosis, electrodialysis, dialysis, ion exchange, membrane bioreactors)
