Objectives
- You will know key concepts of intercultural communication: the theories of Hofstede and Trompenaars on the differences between cultures.
- You will be able to apply the theories of Hofstede and Trompenaars on how to act in intercultural situations of a professional nature.
- You will be able to adapt to an intercultural context, and act appropriately within that context.
- You will be able to explain the main differences between your own and a foreign culture, and to advise on how best to act in typical intercultural communication situations.
- You will be able to act in a correct and competent manner within a multicultural team, for instance regarding the allocation of tasks.
Contents
Introduction into the theory of intercultural communication, with practical applications which are relevant for later professional life - communicating and cooperating with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.
- The theory of cross cultural communication: from ethnocentrism to intercultural competence.
- Defining cultural concepts and parameters.
- Cross-cultural interaction.
- Comparing home and guest/host cultures, and how to act professionally and competently.
