Final objectives

The students have basic knowledge of

  • Belgian history and geography;
  • the actual political structure of the country
  • the social economic and cultural situation of the country

The students are able to

  • Elaborate on an item concerning the Belgian society, using desk top research in order to give a presentation.
  • Share their own point of view with other students.
  • Explain a “Belgian item” to others in a comprehensive and clear way, with the help of modern communication techniques.

Dealing with tasks

  • The students attend the courses regularly.
  • The students do their work within the agreed time.
  • The students deliver a well-informed, nicely accomplished presentation + paper.

Objectives

The main aim of the course is to provide the students with basic information about Belgium and the Belgian society. Starting from their own (foreign) view on Belgium, the students will gradually get to know the complex Belgian situation in a European context (constitutional structures, languages, culture, history, politics, etc.) through examples and real-life situations.

Contents

  • The main topics are:

    • Belgian history
    • Social constitutional and political structure of the country
    • Belgium as a founding member of the European Union

    Other topics may be explored, such as:

    • Peculiar Belgian habits (food and drink, folklore,  …)
    • Belgian athletes and scientists
    • Belgian economy
