Final objectives

Define social problems from a social work context and in collaboration with stakeholders, from a historical, global and sustainable context
Participate actively and in a team-oriented perspective in complex, interdisciplinary and international social work contexts
Act from a social political awareness based on human rights, social justice, collective responsibility and respect for diversities
Demonstrate a lifelong learning commitment towards the development and practice of their profession in an exploratory approach

Objectives

The student can interpret information and resources correctly.
The student situates precisely the concept of globalization in relation to social work
The student critically analyzes social problems from a broad, global and perspective
The student indicates social work in a specific international context
The student has attention for good practises from various (inter)national and interdisciplinary contexts
The student participates constructively in different roles and tasks in a team
The student developes a critical and well-argued point of view on social work based on fundamental values
The students reflects critical on the agogic, political and social dimension of human rights, social justice, diversity and collective

Contents

The course 'global awareness and engagement' consists of the following contents:


1. International identity of social work
2. Social work in an international perspective: global awareness an globalization
3. International topics on social work: contemporary challenges and social work practice
4. International organizations, networks and federations
5. International exchange of knowledge, practices and experiences in social work
6. Using 21st century skills to understand and address global issues


The course consists of a study trip to explore the Belgian context of social work from a global social work perspective and to compare it with another European country.
A substantive part is determined by the organizations visited during the study.

Study costs

The estimated cost of the study trip abroad (transport, hotel and meal) is about €400 to €500. This cost is at the expense of the participating student and is depending on the current rate 

The estimated cost is approx. €5 for the syllabus.

There can be extra costs during company/field visits, the estimated cost is approx. €50.
